Mickelson, D.M., Clayton, Lee, Baker, R.W., Mode, W.N., and Schneider, A.F., 1984, Pleistocene stratigraphic units of Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Miscellaneous Paper, no. 84-1, 15 p.

Summary:

Pg. 4 (table 1); App., p. A12-5 to A12-6. Douglas Member of Miller Creek Formation. (Follows the informal usage of E.A. Need, 1980, Univ. Wisconsin MS thesis, as modified by Lee Clayton; M.D. Johnson, 1980, Univ. Wisconsin MS thesis.) Occurs in the Superior Lobe west of Bayfield Peninsula, Wisconsin. Consists of reddish-brown till. Thickness from 1 to 15 m. Overlies pre-Pleistocene rock, Copper Falls Formation (new), or Hanson Creek Member (new) of Miller Creek Formation. Underlies silt and clay of the Miller Creek or lies at the surface. Age is earliest Holocene.
Type section (=Miller Creek Formation type section): exposures in bluff along Lake Superior, 0.25 mi (0.4 km) west of mouth of Amnicon River, in SE/4 SW/4 SW/4 sec. 27, T. 49 N., R. 12 W., [approx. Lat. 46 deg. 41 min. 30 sec. N., Long. 91 deg. 51 min. 45 sec. W.], Poplar NE 7.5-min quadrangle, Douglas Co., northern WI. Named from Douglas Co.; name credited to E.A. Need.
Reference sections:
(1) typical clay facies, bluff exposure along Lake Superior, 0.7 mi (1.2 km) west of mouth of Iron River, immediately west of mouth of Reefer Creek, in SW/4 NE/4 NW/4 sec. 4, T. 49 N., R. 9 W., [approx. Lat. 46 deg. 45 min. 30 sec. N., Long. 91 deg. 30 min. 28 sec. W., Oulu (extended) 7.5-min quadrangle], Bayfield Co., northern WI; and
(2) sandier facies, bluff on northwestern side of Bark Point, Lake Superior, in SW/4 NE/4 NE/4 sec. 26, T. 51 N., R. 7 W., [approx. Lat. 46 deg. 52 min. 23 sec. N., Long. 91 deg. 12 min. 00 sec. W.], Cornucopia 7.5-min quadrangle, Bayfield Co., northern WI.
