Type section (=Miller Creek Formation type section): exposures in bluff along Lake Superior, 0.25 mi (0.4 km) west of mouth of Amnicon River, in SE/4 SW/4 SW/4 sec. 27, T. 49 N., R. 12 W., [approx. Lat. 46 deg. 41 min. 30 sec. N., Long. 91 deg. 51 min. 45 sec. W.], Poplar NE 7.5-min quadrangle, Douglas Co., northern WI. Named from Douglas Co.; name credited to E.A. Need (Mickelson and others, 1984; Syverson and others, 2011).
Reference sections (Mickelson and others, 1984; Syverson and others, 2011):
(1) typical clay facies, bluff exposure along Lake Superior, 0.7 mi (1.2 km) west of mouth of Iron River, immediately west of mouth of Reefer Creek, in SW/4 NE/4 NW/4 sec. 4, T. 49 N., R. 9 W., [approx. Lat. 46 deg. 45 min. 30 sec. N., Long. 91 deg. 30 min. 28 sec. W., Oulu (extended) 7.5-min quadrangle], Bayfield Co., northern WI; and
(2) sandier facies, bluff on northwestern side of Bark Point, Lake Superior, in SW/4 NE/4 NE/4 sec. 26, T. 51 N., R. 7 W., [approx. Lat. 46 deg. 52 min. 23 sec. N., Long. 91 deg. 12 min. 00 sec. W.], Cornucopia 7.5-min quadrangle, Bayfield Co., northern WI.
