Summary:

Pg. 583-585. Scout Mountain Member of Pocatello Formation. Name proposed for the middle member of Pocatello Formation in the Pocatello area, Bannock County, southeastern Idaho. Composed of (ascending): limestone, locally recrystallized to dense marble; gray, medium-grained quartzite interbedded with siltstone; and intercalated diamictite and quartzite. Is several thousand feet thick; ranges from 900 to 1200 m [approx. 3,000 to 4,000 feet]. Thought to be partly of glacial, submarine, and marine origin. [Overlies and/or interfingers with?] Bannock Volcanic Member (revised) of Pocatello. Overlies lower member of Pocatello; underlies upper member of Pocatello. Age is Precambrian. (Scout Mountain Member of Pocatello Formation adopted by the USGS.)
Type locality (incomplete exposure): on Scout Mountain summit, and on ridge approx. 2 mi (3.2 km) north and south of Scout Mountain, about 15 mi (24 km) south-southeast of Pocatello, in T. 8 and 9 S., R. 35 E., Bannock Co., ID (Northern Rocky Mountain Region). Named from Scout Mountain.
Reference section (composite) --all in T. 7 S., R. 35 E., Bannock Co., ID: (1) in SW/4 sec. 15; (2) W/2 sec. 27; and (3) NW/4 sec. 34.
[Discrepancy: GNU records (USGS DDS-6, Denver GNULEX, Menlo GNULEX, and US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 1520, p. 274) indicate the Scout Mountain Member "interfingers with" and "is equivalent to" the Bannock Volcanic Member. GNC records (USGS Bull. 1372-A, p. A3, A17) indicate the Scout Mountain Member "overlies" the Bannock Volcanic Member. --unresolved.]
