Mickelson, D.M., Clayton, Lee, Baker, R.W., Mode, W.N., and Schneider, A.F., 1984, Pleistocene stratigraphic units of Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Miscellaneous Paper, no. 84-1, 15 p.

Summary:

Pg. 4 (chart); App., p. A3-3 to A3-5. Merrill Member of Lincoln Formation. The upper member of the Lincoln Formation (new) in the Chippewa Sublobe in central Wisconsin is here named the Merrill Member, following the informal usage of W.N. Mode (Univ. Wisconsin MS thesis, 1976), M.T. Stewart (Univ. Wisconsin MS thesis, 1973), and G.L. LaBerge and P.E. Myers (Wisconsin Geol. Nat. Hist. Survey Open-file Rpt., 1971). Consists of dark reddish brown cobbly, pebbly, sandy loam till that resembles the adjacent Bakerville Member (new) of the Lincoln in color and texture. Thickness <10 m. Overlies Wausau Member of Marathon Formation (both new), contact is sharp. Is the surface till unit in Langlade, Lincoln, and eastern Marathon Counties. No exposures of the contact with overlying Nashville Member of Copper Falls Formation (both new) are known. A radiocarbon date of 40,800 +/-2,000 yr B.P. was obtained from organic silt and clay overlying the Merrill at Schelke Bog (citing Stewart and Mickelson, 1976, Jour. Sed. Petrol., v. 46, p. 200-205). Age is considered Pleistocene (early Wisconsinan or older).
