Summary:

Gaikema sandstone member, upper member (of 2) of Kialagvik formation. Consists predominantly of resistant, cliff-forming sandstone beds 1 to 10 feet thick; usually separated by thin laminae of siltstone. Pebble lenses common and several conglomerate beds present. Thickest conglomerate bed approx. 50 feet.. Rocks are dark-green in fresh exposure and dark-brown in weathered exposures. Thickness ranges from 500 feet in southern part of outcrop area to about 970 feet in northern part. Overlies unnamed siltstone member of Kialagvik formation; underlies Tuxedni formation. Age is Early Jurassic (stated in map legend).
Well exposed on Gaikema Creek, in northern part of Iniskin Peninsula, southwestern AK. Named from Gaikema Creek. Name credited to Kellum and Wedow (report in preparation).

Table 5 facing p. 60. Gaikema sandstone member reassigned to Tuxedni formation. Lies between two unnamed siltstone members of Tuxedni. Age is Middle Jurassic (Bajocian). Revisions based on unpublished field work by R.W. Imlay and Don J. Miller. Study area Iniskin Peninsula, southwestern Alaska.

Summary:

Gaikema Sandstone Member of Kirschner and Minard (1948) raised in rank to Gaikema Sandstone, second from lowermost formation (of 6) of Tuxedni Group. Section at type is 850 feet thick. Gradationally overlies Red Glacier Formation (new); conformably underlies Fitz Creek Siltstone (new), both of Tuxedni Group. Age is Middle Jurassic (Bajocian).
Type locality: on left bank of Gaikema Creek starting 5,000 ft from mouth and continuing 1,800 ft upstream, Iniskin Peninsula, southwestern AK.
