Type Locality: Not designated. Named from exposures on Tecovas Creek, Potter Co., panhandle of TX (Gould, 1907). [From US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200] Unit Name History: Name proposed for the lower formation (of 2) of Dockum Group (Gould, 1907). Areal limits; Mapped 1:250k in Quay Co., NM, and Oldham, Hartley, Potter, and Moore Cos., TX (Barnes, 1983). Biostratigraphic dating, based on ostracodes (Kietzke and Lucas 1991). [Discrepancy in GNU records (USGS DDS-6) concerning the areal extent of this unit. Denver GNULEX indicates this unit extends into NM as the Tecovas Formation of the Dockum Group (see Barnes, 1983). The GNU comprehensive file GEONAMES does not. Uncertain if Tecovas Formation of Dockum Group is used by the New Mexico Geol.
