Type section: exposures in and along northeast-flowing tributary to Horse Creek, in SE/4 NE/4 NE/4 NE/4 sec. 26, N/2 NW/4 /NW/4 sec. 25, and S/2 SW/4 SW/4 sec. 24, T. 4 S., R. 9 W., Ames quadrangle, Monroe Co., southwestern IL (Jennings and Fraunfelter, 1984).
Reference section: roadcut on U.S. Highway 61 about 1 mi northwest of town of St. Marys, southern Ste. Genevieve Co. (Thompson, 1986).
Named from Yankeetown School (Weller, 1913).
