Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from exposures in vicinity of Tipton, a station on Union Pacific RR, [in NE/4 sec. 18, T. 19 N., R. 96 W., southeastern corner Tipton 7.5-min quadrangle], Sweetwater Co., southwestern WY (Schultz, 1920; see also Pipiringos, 1955).
Principal reference section: 6 mi east of Tipton Station, in sec. 19, T. 18 N., R. 97 W., Carbon Co., WY (Roehler, 1968).
