Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type locality: Survey Butte, in northern part of Nevada Test Site, Nye Co., NV. Thickest on east side of Rainier Mesa; extends from there southward to Tippipah Point, northward about 15 mi, westward to Pahute Mesa, and eastward to Quartzite Mountain. Named from Survey Butte (Hinrichs and Orkild, 1961; Orkild, 1965).
