D96-D103.

Summary:

Pg. D96-D103. Survey Butte member of Oak Spring formation. Forms steep slopes. Predominantly pale-gray and brown well-bedded tuff composed chiefly of glass shards and fine and coarse unaltered pumice; generally poorly cemented and friable; beds are tabular and lenticular; some cross beds and channel fillings. Fragments of dark dense volcanic rocks and glass make up 20 percent or less of tuff; phenocrysts of feldspar and quartz make up 5 percent or less. Has distinct parallel laminated and cross stratified gray beds alternating with brown beds. On Rainier Mesa lower 150 feet is zeolitic. Thickness 60 to 750 feet. Thins southward from Rainier Mesa and interfingers with Stockade Wash, Topopah Spring, and Tiva Canyon members (all new). Overlies Grouse Canyon member (new). In cross section (fig. _?_), occurs above lower part of Grouse Canyon member and beneath Ranier Mesa member (new). Age is Miocene(?) or younger.
Type locality: Survey Butte, in northern part of Nevada Test Site, Nye Co., NV (Great Basin province). Thickest on east side of Rainier Mesa; extends from there southward to Tippipah Point, northward about 15 mi, westward to Pahute Mesa, and eastward to Quartzite Mountain. Named from Survey Butte.

Summary:

Pg. C60-C62. Survey Butte Member of Piapi Canyon Formation. Revised to basal member (of 5) of Piapi Canyon Formation (new), upper formation of Oak Spring Group (rank raised) in northern part of Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, Great Basin province. Consists predominantly of ash-fall tuff, some probably reworked by water and possibly by wind, and minor amount of nonwelded ash-flow tuff. Believed to be genetically related to other 4 members of Piapi Canyon. In some areas, ash-fall tuff is included with Survey Butte because it cannot be separated out. Source area thought to be near Timber Mountain to the west. Underlies[?] Stockade Wash Member and overlies Grouse Canyon Member of Indian Trail Formation (new) of Oak Spring Group in northern part of area. North of Piapi Canyon, intertongues with Topopah Spring and Tiva Canyon Members; both also reallocated to Piapi Canyon. Age is early Pliocene or younger.
[According to US geologic names lexicon (USGS Bull. 1350, p. 739), underlies Stockade Wash Member. According to GNU records (USGS DDS-6; Denver GNULEX), south of Survey Butte, Stockade Wash Member is a lenticular body enclosed by Survey Butte Member (shown on cross section, fig. _?_). Survey Butte Member underlies Rainier Mesa Member of Indian Trail Formation.]

Summary:

Abandoned. Rocks of this stratigraphic interval designated bedded tuff in Paintbrush Tuff (new). Identification of rocks called Survey Butte has been difficult away from type locality [Survey Butte] and rocks assigned now known to have been derived from many sources.
