Named from exposures along Rockcastle River, [Rockcastle and Laurel Cos.], east-central KY (US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896).
Type locality: Rockcastle Cove, near Jamestown, Fentress Co., northern TN (see Wilson and others, 1956).
