Type section: adjacent to and beneath the arched concrete bridge over Brush Creek (formerly U.S. Highway 66), 2 mi west of town of Riverton, center of west line in NW/4 NW/4 sec. 24, T. 34 S., R. 24 E., Cherokee Co., KS [From MO Geol. Survey lexicon (Thompson, 2001)].
Reference section: along banks and bed of Marias des Cygens River, upstream and downstream from a bridge, 1.5 mi southwest of Prairie City, in E/2 sec. 23 and W/2 sec. 24, T. 38 N., R. 30 W., Pappinville 7.5-min quadrangle, Bates Co., MO [From MO Geol. Survey lexicon (Thompson, 2001)].
Named from Riverton coal in Cherokee Co., southwestern KS (Searight, 1955).
