Raton Formation (CO*,NM*)


Subunits:

Coal beds in central part of field are (ascending): lower Left Fork, upper Left Fork, Cottonwood Canyon, Ancho Canyon, York Canyon, and Chimney Divide. Coal beds in eastern part of field are (ascending): Sugarite, Brown, Green, Tin Pan, and Potato Canyon.


Geologic age:

Late Cretaceous and Paleocene*


Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type area: high mesa region btw. Trinidad, Las Animas Co., CO, and Raton, Colfax Co., NM (Lee, 1917).
Named from exposures near Raton Mesa (Hayden, 1869).

Las Vegas-Raton basin*
