Type locality: Ballinger Canyon, Ballinger Canyon 7.5-min quadrangle, Santa Barbara and Ventura Cos., southern CA. Named from exposures in Quatal Canyon, Apache Canyon and Cuyama Peak 7.5-min quadrangles, Santa Barbara and Ventura Cos., southern CA (VerPlanck, 1952; Hill and others, 1958).
