Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from exposures near Pinedale, on southwest side of Wind River Range, [Sublette Co.], central western WY (Blackwelder, 1915).
Holostratotype area (Pinedale Till) designated where Blackwelder (1915) described moraines around large lakes near Pinedale and where sequence of typical Pinedale moraines are mapped by Richmond (1973) around and along Fremont Lake, Sublette Co., central western WY (Subcommission on North American Quaternary Stratigraphy, 1977).
