Named from exposures on Pembina Mountain and along Pembina River Valley in southern Manitoba, Canada. Pembina Mountain lies partly in North Dakota and partly in Manitoba, and Pembina River cuts through the mountain in both areas (Kirk, 1929).
Type section: in southeastern portion of Lsd. 4, sec. 27, Twp. 1, Range 8WPM (McNeil and Caldwell, 1981) [From Geological Survey of Canada lexicons].
