Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from Patterson Ranch on the south edge of the Arbuckle Mountains on the east side of U.S. Highway 77. On this ranch the Viola, Fernvale. and Sylvan Formations are characteristically developed and they extend from the highway, [approx. E/2 E/2 sec. 25, T. 2 S., R. 1 E., northeastern corner Springer 7.5-min quadrangle, Carter Co.], southern OK (Decker, 1942).
