Type locality: along Lookout Ridge from forest lookout tower, in sec. 35 [unsurveyed], T. 33 N., R. 21 E., [Twisp West 7.5-min quadrangle, 2006 ed.], west to Black Pine Lake, in sec. 36 [unsurveyed], T. 33 N., R. 20 E., [Hoodoo Peak 7.5-min quadrangle, 2006 ed.], about 6 mi southwest of Twisp, Okanogan Co., Okanogan National Forest, central northern WA (Barksdale, 1948, 1975).
Named from Newby Ridge [a few mi north-northwest of type locality, Hoodoo Peak 7.5-min quadrangle (2006 ed.), Okanogan Co., Okanogan National Forest, central northern WA] (Barksdale, 1948).
