Type section: in SW/4 sec. 4, T. 30 N., R. 89 W., south to highest bed in Vice Pocket, in NE/4 NE/4 SE/4 sec. 33, T. 30 N., R. 89 W., Natrona Co., central WY. Named from Moonstone, a smooth monolith of Precambrian granite, against which the Moonstone Formation was deposited (Love, 1961).
