Type section (subsurface): depth-interval 5,830 to 7,710 ft, West Staines State-2 well, in sec. 25, T. 9 N., R. 22 E., [Flaxman Island quadrangle, northern AK]. Named from Mikkelsen Bay, 13 mi (21 km) west-northwest of West Staines State-2 well (Molenaar and others, 1987).
