Summary:

Named as tongue in Canning Formation (new) for Mikkelsen Bay, 13 mi (21 km) west-northwest of West Staines State-2 well. Type section designated as section between 5830 and 7710 ft in West Staines State-2 well, sec.25 T9N R22E [Flaxman Island quad] northern AK. Consists of shale and minor sandstone. Present in wells throughout Point Thomson area and can be traced in subsurface to southwest and west 20 to 30 mi from type well. Consists of shale and minor sandstone. Overlies Staines Tongue (new) of Sagavanirktok Formation; locally unconformably underlies Sagavanirktok Formation (undivided); elsewhere grades into Sagavanirktok. Palynomorph data indicate age is Eocene.
