Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from Menefee Mountain [Montezuma Co., southwestern CO] in which coal in it is being actively mined (Collier, 1919).
Scott and others (1984) refer to Menefee Mountain as the type locality. It extends from sec. 33, T. 35 N., R. 13 W., north to sec. 36, T. 36 N., R. 13 W., Montezuma Co., southwestern CO.
