late Tertiary to Quaternary (Pliocene to early Pleistocene)*
Due to change in Plio-Pleistocene boundary, age may now be considered all or in part Pleistocene.


Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Notable exposures on east side of Afono Bay, in Bartlett Island off Masefau Bay, and in promontory opposite island. Named from latter locality which is near Masefau village, [Tutuila Island East 7.5-min quadrangle, Tutuila Island, American Samoa] (Stearns, 1944).
