Named from Mansfield, Parke Co., southwestern IN (US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200).
Indiana geologists consider type area to be along Raccoon Creek, in T. 14 N., R. 6 W., southern Parke Co., southwestern IN (Shaver and others, 1986).
