Named from Lodgepole Canyon, Blaine Co., MT (Collier and Cathcart, 1922).
Type locality stated to be in Little Chief Canyon, along Lodgepole Creek, about 3 mi south of the Lodgepole subagency of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, in sec. 29, T. 26 N., R. 25 E., Blaine Co., MT (Knechtel, 1959).
Type section designated in Little Chief Canyon, in NE/4 NW/4 sec. 30, T. 26 N., R. 25 E., Blaine Co., MT (Sando and Dutro, 1974).
