Type section (subsurface): depth-interval 5,890 to 6,262 ft, Ugnu State No.1 well, in sec. 22, T. 12 N., R. 9 E., Beechey Point quadrangle, northern AK. Named from Kuparuk River which flows north into Gwydwr Bay (Carman and Hardwick, 1983).
