Type section (subsurface): Cecil H. Lockhart's Root Permit No. 2 well, in center SW/4 SW/4 sec. 7, T. 17 S., R. 30 E., Eddy Co., NM. Named from Grayburg pool which lies 1 mi south of the Root well, in SW/4 SW/4 sec. 7, T. 17 S., R. 30 E., Eddy Co., NM (Dickey, 1940).
Type section (outcrop): on a spur and in an unnamed canyon above Sitting Bull Spring, in NE/4 sec. 9, T. 24 S., R. 22 E., [Queen 7.5-min quadrangle, Eddy Co., Lincoln National Forest, NM] (Moran [abs.], 1954).
Reference section (subsurface): depth-interval 2,750 to 2,390 ft, Humble Oil and Refining Company Federal Bogle No. 1 well, in sec. 30, T. 16 S., R. 30 E., Eddy Co., NM (Tait and others, 1962).
