Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from Elm Creek, Brown Co., Colorado River region, central TX. Forms prominent escarpment in western Coleman Co. (Drake, 1893; US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200).
Type exposures: on lower Elm Creek near its confluence with Colorado River, south of Leaday, Coleman Co., Colorado River region, central TX (Moore, 1949).
