Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type section: below the 7,388 ft elevation point, 2.4 mi east and 1 mi north of southwest corner of Tierra Amarilla Grant, and about 2 mi southwest of emergency overflow outlet for El Vado Reservoir, Boulder Lake quadrangle, Rio Arriba Co., NM. Named from El Vado Reservoir (Landis and Dane, 1967).
Reference section (subsurface): Caulkins Oil Company No. 140 Breech D well, in NE/4 NE/4 sec. 11, T. 26 N., R. 6 W., Rio Arriba Co., NM (Fassett and Jentgen, 1978).
