Not designated. Present in subsurface. Origin of name not stated by authors, but probably named from 5,244 to 5,320 [ft] pay interval in Desert Creek field discovery well, Shell Desert Creek No. 2, in sec. 35, T. 41 S., R. 23 E., San Juan Co., UT (Herman and Barkell, 1957).
[Type section of Desert Creek Substage] (subsurface): depth-interval approx. 5,700 to 6,950 ft, Shell No. 1 Hovenweep well, in sec. 5, T. 40 S., R. 26 E., San Juan Co., UT (Baars and others, 1967).
