Not designated. Named from exposures 3.5 mi along Black Canyon, from a point 1.5 mi east of Curecanti Creek to Nelson Gulch, Montrose Co., CO (Hunter, 1925).
Type locality designated at Curecanti Needle, 4.5 mi downstream from Blue Mesa damsite near Sapinero, Gunnison Co., CO (Hansen, 1964).
