Named from exposures along Cooper River, Berkeley Co., southern SC (M. Tuomey, 1848, Agricultural Survey of South Carolina, 1st Rpt.).
Principal reference locality: exposure in quarry of the Giant Portland Cement Company near Holly Hill, Dorchester Co., southern SC (Ward and others, 1979).
