Type locality: in NE/4 NW/4 SE/4 sec. 7, T. 8 N., R. 2 W., Hillsboro quadrangle, Montgomery Co., southwestern IL. Named from village of Coffeen, 5 mi southwest of type exposure (Kosanke and others, 1960).
