Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type section: short valley about 0.25 mi north of Chouteau Springs, in center sec. 16, T. 48 N., R. 17 W., Cooper Co., central MO (Swallow, 1855; Moore, 1928).
Reference sections: (1) just below Clarence Cannon Dam on either side of Salt River valley, in SE/4 sec. 22 and NE/4 sec. 27, T. 55 N., R. 7 W., Ralls Co., Joanna 7.5-min quadrangle, and (2) at Buzzard Cave, in NE/4 SW/4 NW/4 sec. 5, T. 53 N., Pike Co., both in northeastern MO (Thompson, 1986).
