Named from Chickabally Mountain near where unit crosses Middle Fork of Cottonwood Creek (Murphy and others, 1964).
Type section (is reference section of Murphy and others, 1964): along Roaring River, in secs. 32 and 33, T. 30 N., R. 7 W., Ono 15-min quadrangle, Shasta Co., CA (Dailey, 1973).
