Named from Cedartop Butte, [on North Fork of Red River], Roger Mills Co., southwestern OK (US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896).
Type locality (redesignated): in bluffs about 250 yds north of Cedartop Butte, in SE/4 SE/4 sec. 35, T. 8 N., R. 21 W., Beckham Co., southwestern OK (Scott and Ham, 1957).
