Named from Carbondale, Jackson Co., southern IL (Lines, 1912).
Type section [composite]: exposures in SE/4 NE/4 sec. 1, T. 7 N., R. 4 E., Glasford quadrangle, and in NW/4 NE/4 NW/4 sec. 20 and SW corner sec. 21, T. 8 N., R. 3 E., Canton quadrangle, Fulton Co., northwestern IL (Kosanke and others, 1960).
