Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Type section (subsurface): depth-interval 5,830 to 11,980 ft, Mobil Oil Company West Staines State No. 2 well, in sec. 25, T. 9 N., R. 22 E., [Flaxman Island quadrangle, northern AK]. Named from Canning River, which flows along much of western boundary of ANWR coastal plain, northern AK (Molenaar and others, 1987).
