Origin of name not stated by Anderson (1930), but almost certainly is Blacklead mining district, Orofino region, Clearwater Co., northern ID (US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896).
Lies far back in Clearwater Mountains at head of Cayuse Creek, a tributary of North Fork of Clearwater River. Also present in a high valley between Blacklead Peak and Rhodes Creek, Orofino region (Anderson, 1930).
