Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

Named from exposures along Black Creek in Darlington and Florence Cos., SC. C.W. Cooke states (USGS Bull. 867, 1936): Although no locality was specified by Sloan as the type, the outcrops of the formation on Black Creek near the crossing of Cashua Ferry road east of Darlington may be regarded as typical (US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200).
