Named from occurrence on Beartooth Butte, just northwest of Beartooth Lake on southeast flank of Beartooth Mountains, in southwestern corner of T. 58 N., R. 105 W., Park Co., northwestern WY, 3 mi south of Montana line and 18.4 mi east of Yellowstone National Park boundary line (Dorf, 1934).
