Type section, locality, area and/or origin of name:

[Elston (1957) credits Jicha (1954) with designation of type locality, in sec. 25, T. 18 S., R. 9 W., Lake Valley quadrangle, Sierra Co., southwestern NM. On p. 48, Jicha (1948) states "The Bear Springs basalt has been named from an outcrop at the intersection of secs. 17, 18, 19, and 20, T. 20 S., R. 8 W., about half a mile distant from Bear Springs Canyon." However, geol. map (Jicha, 1954, pl. 1) does not show unit mapped at this locality. Bear Springs Canyon crosses secs. 17, 18, 19, and 20, T. 19 S., R. 8 W., Lake Valley 15-min quadrangle (1964 ed.), Sierra Co., southwestern NM. Bear Springs Basalt is mapped about 0.5 mi northeast of canyon in SW/4 sec. 17, approx. Lat. 32 deg. 39 min. 02 sec. N., Long. 107 deg. 41 min. 40 sec. W.]
