Named from exposures [no longer extant] along Ashley River, Dorchester Co., southern SC (M. Tuomey, 1848, Agricultural Survey of South Carolina, 1st Rpt., p. 162-169, 190, 211; US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896, p. 81; Ward and others, 1979).
Principal reference locality: bluff on east bank of Edisto River, Givhans Ferry State Park, Lat. 33.0321 deg. N., Long. 80.3882 deg. W., NAD83, Maple Cane Swamp 7.5-min quadrangle, Colleton Co., southern SC (Ward and others, 1979; see also Weems and others, 2016).
Reference section: at Giant Portland Cement Company quarry, 3.2 km north of Harleyville, east of Route 453, Dorchester Co., southern SC (Ward and others, 1979).
