Named from exposures about 6 mi north of Arcadia, along Mare Branch of Peace River, DeSoto Co., southern FL (US geologic names lexicon, USGS Bull. 896).
Principal reference section (subsurface): depth-interval -97 to -520 ft (-30 to -159 m), Hogan No. 1 type core W-12050, in SE/4 NW/4 sec. 16., T. 38 S., R. 26 E., DeSoto Co., southern FL (Scott, 1988).
