Named from exposures in bluffs of Altamaha River, especially btw. Rocky Hammock [now in Jeff Davis Co.] to Doctortown, Wayne Co., GA (US geologic names lexicons, USGS Bull. 896, 1200).
Principal reference section: exposures at Upper Sister Bluff, south bank of Altamaha River, Appling Co., GA (Huddlestun, 1988).
