Named from Alsate Creek, which joins Pena Colorada Creek from west at Fort Pena Colorada. Is well exposed in cut on creek 2.5 mi west-southwest of Fort Pena, near road to Roberts Ranch, Brewster Co., southwestern TX (King, 1931).
