Notable exposures in Sierra Nevada, east-central CA; in type section for southern end of †Amador Group [later abandoned] on Merced River, Tuolumne and Mariposa Cos., and southward into Indian Gulch quadrangle, Mariposa Co. Origin of name not stated by author, but presumably named from Agua Fria Creek in southeast corner of Coulterville 15-min quadrangle, Mariposa Co. (Taliaferro, 1933, 1943).
