Named as youngest formation in Laupahoehoe Group. Type locality exposed at upper end of Waikahalulu Gulch, west of Summit Road, Mauna Kea Volcano, Island of Hawaii, HI. Consists of cinder cone and lava flows "probably ... latest episode of volcanism on the mountain." Overlies late Makanaka moraine. Assigned tentatively carbon-14 age of 3600 yr B.P.

Carbon-14 age ranges from 9080 +/-200 to 4500 yr B.P.

Type section in upper end of Waikahalulu Gulch, west of Summit Road [19 deg 43' 57WN, 155 deg 31' 45"W, Puu Koli 7.5' quad] Mauna Kea Volcano, Island of Hawaii. Reference section in Pohakuloa Gulch. Rocks formerly assigned by Stearns and Macdonald (1946) to lower and upper members of Laupahoehoe Volcanic Series are here redesignated to "Waikahalulu Formation". Consists of hawaiite with some alkalic olivine basalt and associated pyroclastics that mantle nearly all of upper slopes of Mauna Kea Volcano. Overlapping flows as thick as 100 m along principal rift zones. Interfingers with glacial deposits of Waihu (older) and Makanaka (younger) Formations. Unconformably overlies Hopukani and Pohakuloa Formations (Hamakua Group). K-Ar and carbon-14 ages range from 174,400 +/-26,500 through 4400 +/-110 yr B.P.

Reduced in rank and name changed to indicate lithology (formerly Waikahalulu Formation of Laupahoehoe Group of Porter, 1974). Now member of Laupahoehoe Volcanics. Includes volcanic rocks formerly assigned to Liloe, Hanaipoe, and Kemole Members of Makanaka Formation --names now applied to chronostratigraphic units, Liloean, Hanaipoean, and Kemolean stages. Interstratified with Waihu (older) and Makanaka (older) Glacial Members. Conformably and locally unconformably overlies Hamakua Volcanics. Assigned Pleistocene and Holocene age based on carbon-14 and K-Ar ages of 0.19 to 0.0045 Ma.

Unit abandoned. Rocks are reassigned, in part, to undivided part of Laupahoehoe Volcanics and, in part, to Liloe Spring Volcanic Member (new) (Hamakua Volcanics).
