Summary:

Named as lower part of Missouri series for Canyon de las Veredas, central part of Oscura Mountains, NM; divided into (ascending): Coane formation, Adobe formation, and Council Spring limestone (all new). Type locality is section measured on northwest side Oscura Mountains, on west slope of range, eastern part SE1/4 sec 36, T5S, R5E, Socorro Co, NM in Orogrande basin. Base of type section is about 150 ft above base of mountain slope, and top of type section is at top of second prominent limestone cliff above base of slope. At type is 125 ft thick and composed of gray to light-gray limestones, thin calcareous shales, and two thin beds of arkosic sandstones. In Mocking Bird Gap, about 18 mi south of type, approximately 30 percent is sandstone. To north and west of type, in region of Ladron Mountains and south end of Manzano Mountains, contains a large percentage of gray shale and a subordinate amount of sandstone. Recognized over a wide area in NM. Very large and varied faunas. Is easily identified by fusulinid faunas and distinctive lithology. Very thin lithologic units of group have been traced over hundreds of sq mi in central NM. Overlies rocks of Bolander group (new) of Des Moines series; underlies Burrego formation of Hansonburg group (both new) of Missouri series. Is Pennsylvanian (Missouri) age.
