Summary:

Pg. 35 (table 2), 38, pls. 1-a, 2. Travesser formation of Dockum group. Consists largely of clayey silt and fine-grained sandstone. Sandstone beds, as much as 20 feet thick, in measured section, range from massive to thin-bedded and from parallel bedded to cross laminated. Conglomeratic lenses common; some fissile clay present. Commonly medium red brown; some orange sandstone and some dark-red-brown beds. Thickness 245 feet at type section; thickens eastward to as much as 550 feet in northeast Union County, northeastern New Mexico. Overlies Baldy Hill formation (new), possible angular unconformity; underlies Sloan Canyon formation. Age is Late Triassic.
Type section: 2 mi south of Baldy Hill, in sec. 12, T. 31 N., R. 32 E., Union Co., northeastern NM. Named from exposures near Travesser Creek. Underlies slope wash and alluvium from Tollgate eastward to OK State line.

Summary:

Removed from Dockum Group, a term not used in Union Co, NM. Lower contact with Baldy Hill Formation, a disconformity, is removed to exclude a 3 m-thick conglomeratic sandstone. The sandstone is reassigned to the Baldy Hill as its uppermost bed and named Cobert Canyon Sandstone Bed. The revision deemed necessary because top of Cobert Canyon is marked by a mappable color change from grayish [-brown] to reddish-brown of Travesser. Baldy Peak-Travesser contact as revised is a disconformity. Upper contact with the Sloan Canyon Formation conformable. Is locally overlain by Entrada Sandstone; contact between these two formations is a disconformity or an angular unconformity. A remeasurement of the type section yielded a thickness of 101.6 m (rather than 75 m of Baldwin and Muehlberger). Difference in thickness figure attributable to local differences as to placement of upper contact--which is placed at a color change from reddish-brown of Travesser to yellow-greenish-grayish [brown] of Sloan Canyon. Another distinction is that Sloan Canyon has more sandstone beds than Travesser. Is widely exposed in the Dry Cimarron valley of Union Co, NM in the Sierra Grande uplift. May be present in adjacent Cimarron Co, OK under cover. Cross sections; correlation chart. Phytosaur skull newly found; metoposaurids also identified. Clastic-lacustrine environment found. Norian age.
